Robredo Says Officials “Must Respond” To COA Audits For Transparency

ROBREDO ON COA ISSUE

– Vice President Leni Robredo emphasized that government officials “must respond” to the Commission on Audit’s (COA) reports.

Recently, government agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) were bombarded with queries regarding how they handled their funds.

According to lawmakers, these agencies had “questionable” purchases paired with highly “suspicious” prices. Meanwhile, the most highlighted issue was the DOH’s “deficiencies” when it came to its P67 billion COVID-19 funds.

As a response to these issues, Robredo, who championed as COA’s highest-rated agency for three straight years, said officials must respond to COA for the Filipino public.

According to an article from Inquirer, she said:

“So when these reports and audits come—we must respond. Kasi we owe it hindi lang sa COA, pero mas importante, sa taumbayan”

Furthermore, Robredo stressed the importance of providing COA with an explanation of how agencies handle their funds. This statement followed government officials ranting about how “unfair” COA’s public audit report was.

Previously, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III got emotional again, similar to what he did last year following a COA audit report. Duque, posted on social media that due to COA’s report, he got sleep deprived for several days.

Meanwhile, President Duterte responded saying that the COA should stop presenting their audit reports and wait for officials to finish their jobs.

However, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque stated that Duterte simply aired his frustrations toward COA. Moreover, he highlighted that the president was not making any threats.
