China stays unbeaten with win over Japan in Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers

MANILA, Philippines — China needed a late surge to beat Japan, 90-84, and remain undefeated in Group B of the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark, Pampanga.

Down seven with a little over six minutes left, China went on a 17-4 run to turn the game around.

China’s size advantage was too much to overcome for Japan with 7-foot-1 center Zhou Qi leading the way.

Qi imposed his will with 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks to help his team go 3-0.

A triple by Zhao Yanhao sealed the game for China, 88-81, with 1:06 remaining. China outrebounded Japan, 37-22.
