United States drugmaker Moderna has applied for an Emergency Use Authorization for its mRNA-1273 coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine, the Food and Drug Administration said on Monday.

FDA Director-General Rolando Enrique Domingo said that the agency is checking the documents submitted by Moderna.

In earlier interviews, Domingo said that even before the drugmaker lodged its application, its group of experts have been poring over their published studies to study its safety and efficacy profile.

The vaccine has an efficacy rate of 94.1 percent in preventing Covid-19 in its clinical trials in the United States.

The Philippines is expected to receive 20 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, 13 million of which was procured by the government while the rest will be used by the private sector.
