Palace confirms appointment of Alex Gesmundo as chief justice

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as chief justice, Malacañang confirmed on Monday.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque Jr. expressed confidence that Gesmundo will uphold excellence and independence of the judiciary.

Chief Presidential Legal Adviser Salvador Panelo told The Manila Times last Friday, April 2, that the President signed the appointment paper of Gesmundo.

“Kinukumpirma ng Palasyo na pinirmahan na po ng Presidente ang appointment ni dating Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo bilang Chief Justice ng Korte Suprema ng Pilipinas (The Palace confirms that the President has signed the appointment of former Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines),” Roque said.

Gesmundo will serve as chief justice until November 2026.
