‘Nomadland’ faces controversy

TAIPEI, Taiwan: Director Chloe Zhao’s success — winning a Golden Globe for “Nomadland” and is now a leading Oscar contender — was not met with applause in China.

The Beijing-born filmmaker’s success is overshadowed by nationalist backlash regarding her citizenship and identity. Some social media posts about the film were removed, and questioned whether it will be released in China.

Some Chinese web users questioned whether Zhao — who was educated in the UK and the US — was still a Chinese citizen and if she could be counted as one. Others dug up interviews where Zhao said things that they considered an “insult to China.”
