Elderly woman killed in Malate fire

A 69-year old woman was killed in a fire in Malate, Manila on Tuesday morning, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported.

The victim, identified as Lyndia Montero Bernal, 69, was killed in a fire that razed a residential establishment at P. Ocampo Street, Malate around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

She was declare missing in a previous report but was later found dead, authorities said.

The fire reached the third alarm by 3:30 a.m., was put under control at 4:50 a.m. and was declared out at 6:15 a.m.

Some 200 families were affected by the fire, which quickly spread because the structures were made of light materials, according to authorities.

The Manila City Government said the homeless families are currently at the Aurora Quezon Elementary School.
